Bell felt caught in a storm. Her heart raced as Wolf helped her to the SUV, her body trembling as if buffeted by hurricane winds. They had nearly died. The sound of the gunshot rang in her ears, accompanied by her panicked breathing. Bell paused and looked behind her, wondering if the shooter was still on the ridge or if he’d run off. She craned her neck, searching the trees, and found nothing.

Wolf stopped as well, sensing her distress. He reached out and grabbed her arm, his grip reassuring and strong. “It’s okay, Scarlett,” he said, his voice gentle and low. “You’re alive.”

Despite the assurance in his voice, Bell felt like she was falling apart. Wolf seemed to sense that as well, and he reached out and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look up and meet his gaze.

“You’ve faced worse and survived. Stay with me.”

She blinked, not processing his words. Yes, she’d encountered serial killers and lived to tell about it, yet her life seemed like a dream, as if the events had happened to someone else.

“Bell,” he said, his eyes intense and searching. “Who are you?”

Bell swallowed, confused by the sudden change in topic.

“What?”

“Tell me your name.”

“I’m Scarlett Bell,” she said, her voice trembling. “I’m an agent with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.”

Wolf wasn’t satisfied with her answer. His hand traced a gentle path down her arm. “Where are we?”

Bell glanced around, her mind foggy from the shock of the gunshots. “We’re at a park near a school,” she said, her voice still unsteady.

“I can see that, but in what town?”

“Westernville. We’re hunting a child predator.”

Wolf nodded and reached out, taking her hand in his. “Come on,” he said, squeezing her fingers. “Let’s get you to the vehicle.”

Bell followed him, her legs like rubber. When they reached the SUV, he stopped and faced her, his eyes still intense.

“Whoever did this, I’ll find him,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “And I’m going to make sure he pays the ultimate price.”

“Not now, please. He has a gun. What if he’s hiding in the trees?”

“He’ll make a mistake, and when he does, I’ll be there to end his life.”

His words rang in Bell’s ears as she climbed into the vehicle. She sat in the passenger seat, her mind playing over the morning’s events. She couldn’t believe that it had almost happened again, that she had almost been shot. It reminded her of following Congresswoman San Giovanni before she was assassinated.

The thickets to either side of the road were shrouds of darkness and secrets. Wolf drove, the engine of the SUV humming and helping Bell calm down. Her fists unclasped. She hadn't realized how tense she’d been since the shooting. Wolf’s eyes focused on the road ahead, his hands gripping the steering wheel.

Bell felt a strange sense of comfort, sitting beside him. Despite how dangerous the fugitive could be, he was strong and confident, his presence lending her security.

“Do you think it was Digby Todd?” Bell asked, her voice cracking slightly. She had been thinking about this since the shooting.
