Bell felt caught in a storm. Her heart raced as Wolf helped her to the SUV, her body trembling as if buffeted by hurricane winds. They had nearly died. The sound of the gunshot rang in her ears, accompanied by her panicked breathing. Bell paused and looked behind her, wondering if the shooter was still on the ridge or if heâd run off. She craned her neck, searching the trees, and found nothing.
Wolf stopped as well, sensing her distress. He reached out and grabbed her arm, his grip reassuring and strong. âItâs okay, Scarlett,â he said, his voice gentle and low. âYouâre alive.â
Despite the assurance in his voice, Bell felt like she was falling apart. Wolf seemed to sense that as well, and he reached out and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look up and meet his gaze.
âYouâve faced worse and survived. Stay with me.â
She blinked, not processing his words. Yes, sheâd encountered serial killers and lived to tell about it, yet her life seemed like a dream, as if the events had happened to someone else.
âBell,â he said, his eyes intense and searching. âWho are you?â
Bell swallowed, confused by the sudden change in topic.
âWhat?â
âTell me your name.â
âIâm Scarlett Bell,â she said, her voice trembling. âIâm an agent with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.â
Wolf wasnât satisfied with her answer. His hand traced a gentle path down her arm. âWhere are we?â
Bell glanced around, her mind foggy from the shock of the gunshots. âWeâre at a park near a school,â she said, her voice still unsteady.
âI can see that, but in what town?â
âWesternville. Weâre hunting a child predator.â
Wolf nodded and reached out, taking her hand in his. âCome on,â he said, squeezing her fingers. âLetâs get you to the vehicle.â
Bell followed him, her legs like rubber. When they reached the SUV, he stopped and faced her, his eyes still intense.
âWhoever did this, Iâll find him,â he said, his voice low and dangerous. âAnd Iâm going to make sure he pays the ultimate price.â
âNot now, please. He has a gun. What if heâs hiding in the trees?â
âHeâll make a mistake, and when he does, Iâll be there to end his life.â
His words rang in Bellâs ears as she climbed into the vehicle. She sat in the passenger seat, her mind playing over the morningâs events. She couldnât believe that it had almost happened again, that she had almost been shot. It reminded her of following Congresswoman San Giovanni before she was assassinated.
The thickets to either side of the road were shrouds of darkness and secrets. Wolf drove, the engine of the SUV humming and helping Bell calm down. Her fists unclasped. She hadn't realized how tense sheâd been since the shooting. Wolfâs eyes focused on the road ahead, his hands gripping the steering wheel.
Bell felt a strange sense of comfort, sitting beside him. Despite how dangerous the fugitive could be, he was strong and confident, his presence lending her security.
âDo you think it was Digby Todd?â Bell asked, her voice cracking slightly. She had been thinking about this since the shooting.
